Desk Sign vs Crestron Desk Touch vs Logi Dock Flex: an honest comparison.

Three small things you put on a desk to make hot-desking work. They look like the same category at a glance and they're really three different bets about what a desk needs at the point of arrival. One is a sign that lights up. One is a sign tied into a building-control ecosystem. One is a docking station that happens to know your name. The right pick has less to do with the spec sheet than with what already lives on your network.

How to choose

Three devices, three different floor plans.

Choose Desk Sign if…
  • You want people to claim a desk however they walked in, badge tap, phone NFC, Apple or Google Wallet, HID Mobile, QR, or just touching the screen.
  • Your booking software is already chosen and you don't want to be told what it has to be. Desk Sign sits behind OfficeSpace, ServiceNow, Eptura, Microsoft Places, Robin, Envoy, Appspace, and a dozen others through the open API.
  • Different floors need different power: USB-C in retrofits, PoE 802.3af in greenfield. Same firmware either way.
  • Mounting per neighbourhood: 3M adhesive on glass, magnetic plates for hot-desk pods, weighted bases for executive zones, screw-down for stand-ups.
Choose Crestron Desk Touch if…
  • You're already a Crestron shop, boardrooms, lecture halls, building control, and want one vendor with one console (XiO Cloud) managing every panel.
  • Your installer is Crestron-certified and you'd rather have them quote desks than commission a new device class.
  • You're standardising on Microsoft 365 or one of Crestron's named partners (Appspace, Calven, Tango) and don't need a long tail of niche integrations.
  • You want PoE+ power, a touch screen, an LED bar, and a small footprint, and don't need RFID or wallet check-in at the panel itself.
Choose Logi Dock Flex if…
  • The desks are hot desks for laptop workers, people who plug in a MacBook or ThinkPad and treat check-in as a side effect of starting work.
  • You'd rather buy one device per desk that's both the dock and the booking endpoint than buy a sign plus a separate dock.
  • You're standardising on Microsoft Teams Workspace Reservation, Zoom Workspace Reservation, or Logitech's own booking service, with Logitech Sync as your management plane.
  • 100 W USB-C charging, 4K HDMI / DisplayPort out, six USB peripheral ports, and a Kensington lock matter more than a slim signage footprint.
Check-in

The real question: how does the desk know who you are?

Hardware tables flatten this question. The difference between these three is what physical action turns a desk from "available" to "claimed by you."

Desk Sign is intentionally multi-modal. The Embrava spec lists RFID at 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz, NFC tap via iOS and Android phones, QR with the user's device, and a touch-screen mode for anonymous reservations. Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and HID Mobile Credentials are first-class options. The bet is that you don't get to dictate how thousands of employees prefer to check in, some carry badges, some carry phones, some hate apps and just want to touch a screen. Desk Sign accepts whatever they brought.

Crestron Desk Touch is touch-first. The TSS-470E is a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen; check-in is a screen tap. For environments that prefer QR, Crestron sells a separate placard, the Desk Q, a custom card with a QR identifier rather than a powered panel. The TSS-470E datasheet doesn't list RFID or NFC reader hardware on the panel itself.

Logi Dock Flex makes check-in invisible. Walk up, plug your laptop into the USB-C cable, and the dock, already aware of your booking through Logitech Sync, claims the desk on your behalf. The flip side: NFC, RFID, and wallet check-in aren't listed on the Dock Flex spec. If your policy needs to accommodate a visitor without a registered laptop, the booking platform's mobile app handles that, not the dock.

Power & deployment

Where the cable comes from drives most of the install cost.

Desk Sign takes either path. USB-C from the included 5V adapter or PoE 802.3af off the Ethernet drop. IT picks per room, USB-C for retrofits where you can't pull cable, PoE for greenfield. Same firmware either way.

Crestron Desk Touch is PoE+ first. The TSS-470E is rated for IEEE 802.3at Type 1 Class 2 PoE, drawing about 6.5 W typical, with a 24 VDC power pack (PW-2407WU) available separately. No USB-C input, Crestron assumes you have managed network drops at every desk.

Logi Dock Flex uses a DC barrel, and reverses the relationship. The dock is itself a power source: up to 100 W of USB-C charging out to the docked laptop. A desk with Dock Flex doesn't need a separate laptop charger, which is a real cable-clutter win, but it does need a power brick in the cable run. PoE isn't published as an option.

If you can't pull new cable, Desk Sign's USB-C mode is the only one that doesn't need a network drop. If you're replacing per-desk laptop chargers with one dock that powers everything, the Logitech path is what pays for that change.

Form factor

A sign, a panel, or a dock, the actual category fork.

Desk Sign is a sign. A 2.8-inch LCD touch screen on the desk edge, glass partition, or stand-up post, showing a name and status. The 256-colour LED bar gives the status read from across the floor; the speaker offers twelve adjustable tones. Mounting options span 3M adhesive, magnetic plate, weighted base, screw-down, and partition mounts.

Crestron Desk Touch is also a sign, but tighter. A 3.5-inch transflective LCD with capacitive multi-touch and an RGB LED light bar, in a 3.95" × 3.95" × 1.33" body weighing 5.4 oz. Smallest possible footprint to disappear into the rest of the Crestron room aesthetic. Multisurface, retrofit bracket, tabletop, and wall mounts sold separately.

Logi Dock Flex is not a sign. It's a docking station with a screen on top. At 5.56" × 7.91" × 6.96" and a full kilogram, it occupies real desk real estate, and it's also routing 4K video via HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, hosting six USB peripherals, and pushing 100 W to the laptop. The 8-inch 1280×800 screen is bigger than the other two combined.

Choose Desk Sign or Desk Touch when you want desks that look like desks with a small sign on them. Choose Dock Flex when you want desks that look like docking stations with a sign integrated.

Platform & manageability

How "vendor lock-in" plays out at scale.

Crestron is the most coupled to its own ecosystem. Desk Touch is managed through Crestron XiO Cloud, the same console you already use for rooms, control processors, and displays. Native booking is the Crestron Scheduling App and Microsoft 365, with named partners Appspace, Calven, and Tango at launch. If you're standardised on Crestron, the desk panel is the logical extension. If you aren't, you're introducing a new management plane.

Logitech is coupled to its own platform too. Logi Dock Flex runs CollabOS and is managed through Logitech Sync. Identity flows via Azure AD or Okta, calendars via Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. The booking layer is multi-service: Microsoft Teams Workspace Reservation, Zoom Workspace Reservation, Logitech's own service, and Microsoft Places, pick whichever your tenant already runs.

Desk Sign sits behind whichever booking platform you already use. OfficeSpace, ServiceNow, Eptura, Microsoft Places, Robin, Envoy, Korbyt, Appspace, Skedda, Calven, EMS, IBM Tririga, Maptician, plus any other via the open API. Identity is your existing IdP via SSO/SAML, no separate Crestron or Logitech account to provision. Fleet management runs through the Embrava DMS.

The decision simplifies to: which console do you want to be in? If it's Crestron XiO Cloud, take Crestron. If it's Logitech Sync, take Dock Flex. If neither, or if you'd rather keep desk hardware in the same plane as your booking platform, Desk Sign drops in behind it.

The questions buyers ask us.

Which of these supports RFID badge check-in?
Desk Sign. Embrava's published spec lists RFID at 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz, NFC tap, QR code, plain touch, plus Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and HID Mobile Credentials. The Crestron TSS-470E datasheet doesn't list RFID hardware on the panel itself, check-in is touch, with QR available via the separate Desk Q placard. Logi Dock Flex's published spec is silent on NFC and RFID; check-in there is the USB-C plug-in.
Can any of these be powered without pulling a network cable?
Yes, with caveats. Desk Sign supports USB-C power from any 5V adapter, which is the easiest retrofit path. Crestron Desk Touch supports a 24 VDC power pack (PW-2407WU) sold separately if you can't deliver PoE. Logi Dock Flex uses its own DC barrel power supply, not PoE; it never relies on the network for power.
We're a Microsoft Places shop. Which works best?
All three integrate with Microsoft 365 and Places. Logi Dock Flex leans into Places hardest, Logitech and Microsoft publish joint reference architectures. Desk Sign supports Places alongside a much wider list of booking platforms, which matters if Places is your system today but you don't want to be locked to it. Crestron's Microsoft 365 support is solid for calendaring, with the Crestron Scheduling App as the native UX layer.
Does Logi Dock Flex replace the desk sign, or do you need both?
It can replace it in the laptop-worker case, the 8-inch screen displays the booking and acts as the check-in surface. If your floor mixes laptop workers and desk-bound staff (developers on big monitors, finance teams on fixed hardware, admin without laptops), a dock-only deployment leaves those desks without a check-in surface. Desk Sign or Desk Touch covers them with a smaller dedicated device.
How does the status colour show across the room?
Desk Sign has a 256-colour customisable LED bar plus a speaker with twelve adjustable tones. Crestron Desk Touch has an RGB LED light bar, green, amber, red, or custom. Logi Dock Flex doesn't list a separate LED indicator; status surfaces on the 8-inch screen itself, which is fine up close and less obvious at a distance.
We already use Appspace. Will any of these run with Appspace for desk booking?
All three. Desk Sign integrates with Appspace alongside many other booking platforms. Crestron launched Desk Touch with named partner support for Appspace, Calven, and Tango. Appspace has separately publicised integration with Logi Dock Flex.
Bottom line

Three devices for three floor plans.

If your AV programme is standardised on Crestron, control processors in every boardroom, XiO Cloud as your console, a Crestron-certified integrator on retainer, Crestron Desk Touch is the right answer. One vendor, one console, one quote. The TSS-470E does the job a desk panel should do, with a clean LED bar, a tiny footprint, and PoE+ power.

If you've already committed to putting a dock at every hot-desk, your booking platform is on Logitech Sync's supported list (Microsoft Teams Workspace Reservation, Zoom Workspace Reservation, or Logitech's own service), and your security team is comfortable with one vendor owning both the dock and the booking endpoint, Logi Dock Flex consolidates the hardware. The trade-offs are real: per-desk cost runs several multiples of a dedicated sign, footprint is larger, every desk has to be a laptop desk, and badge / NFC / Wallet check-in at the desk goes away because there's no reader on the dock.

If neither describes your floor, if your booking platform isn't a Crestron or Logitech named partner, if your people show up with badges and phones as often as laptops, if some desks need a small sign and others a magnetic mount on a glass partition, Desk Sign earns its place. Multi-modal check-in by design, USB-C or PoE per install, open API to whichever platform you bring, SSO into your existing IdP.

None of these is "best." Pick the one whose strengths match where your floor actually is.
